Bloggers

The Age:

THEY could be regarded as cyber-geeks who spend more time with their computer than people, but new Melbourne research shows bloggers feel more socially connected than non-bloggers.

The findings are reported by two researchers from Swinburne University of Technology, psychologist James Baker and Professor Susan Moore, who examined the psychological traits of 134 Australians, Americans and Britons who were new to the social networking site MySpace.

At first, they found those who intended to blog were more psychologically distressed than those who did not. They were also more likely to self-blame and vent to cope with stress, and were less satisfied with the number of friends they had.

But two months later, in a follow-up survey with 59 of the same group, the researchers found those who had blogged were happier with the number of friends they had, online and face-to-face, than non-bloggers — and the bloggers more likely to reach out to those friends for help.

Blogs are personal web diaries published on the internet. The research findings appeared in CyberPsychology & Behaviour.
